Lake Tahoe is home to 15 ski resorts. But what if you don’t ski or snowboard? We’ll let you in on a little secret. Not all people who live in Lake Tahoe ski. There are plenty of locals that do and gleefully count up their days on the mountain each season, but it’s not the only reason people love to live in Lake Tahoe.
Here are some of the top winter activities that don’t require a ski lift.
- Snowshoeing, it’s an amazing workout and the investment is small. There are also opportunities to try it out before you buy. Camp Richardson Historic Resort’s Mountain Sports Center rents snowshoes and has groomed trails. Lake Tahoe snow is deep and strapping on a pair of snowshoes can get you deep into the forest on a beautiful snowy day. There are even snowshoe races. The Tahoe Mountain Milers Running Club is hosting the “Fresh Tracks” 5K Snowshoe Walk and Race on Sunday, February 26, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Camp Richardson.
- Cross-country Skiing. From groomed Nordic ski tracks to wide open meadows, South Lake Tahoe has many areas to park and glide out. In fact, cross-country skiing here dates back to the mid-1850s when famed skier Snowshoe Thompson carried mail across the Sierra Nevada.
- Snow tubing. South Shore has six places to have some sledding fun, all with groomed runs. Tube Tahoe is the newest spot. Located in Meyers at the Tahoe Paradise Golf Course, they offer some of the longest tube runs in the area and they offer season passes.
- Fishing. I know, we surprised you there, but, yes, you can go fishing on Lake Tahoe in the winter. And there are nearby lakes that offer ice fishing possibilities. Tahoe Sport Fishing offers charters year round.
- Snowmobiling. For people looking for a more motorized activity snowmobiling is for you. South Lake Tahoe has four different options for people looking to experience guided tours. There is a choice of trails with lake views to a shuttle to Alpine County’s pristine Hope Valley for really getting away from it all.
