Lake Tahoe Bears are making headlines and not for the right reasons. How can we live in harmony? It’s all about us. Here are some top tips to make sure you are doing your part to keep Lake Tahoe’s wildlife wild.
- Always secure your trash in bear-proof containers. Bears’ keen sense of smell is legendary and the reputation is well earned. Bears can smell their next meal from up to 20 miles away and they are determined.
- Never leave ground floor windows and doors unlocked even if you’re at home. Habituated bears can open doors and windows.
- Always let a bear know that your house and property isn’t where it should be. Make noise, bang pots and pans, and send them on their way from a secure distance.
- Never leave food in your vehicle and keep it locked. Bears will walk down the street trying each car door and they have been known to accidentally lock themselves into cars they can access. Your car interior will not survive this type of visitor.
- Secure bird feeders, when bears are active bring them in, and always bring them in at night.
