With 56 feet and two of the snowiest months on record, Lake Tahoe ski resorts announced they are extending their seasons. Spring skiing is now going into summer skiing due to the nonstop parade of winter storms that blanketed the Sierra this year.
Palisades Tahoe said it will stay open into July. On the South Shore of Lake Tahoe, Heavenly Ski Resort said this week that its closing day will be May 7, and Kirkwood Mountain Resort said its lifts will be turning until the weekend of May 12. The resorts were also able to open earlier this season with snowfall in October and November.
While the world has been gaping at pictures of enormous snow walls on area highways, local ski and board hounds have been getting in some epic days during the breaks in the weather. The Gunbarrel 25 race is returning to Heavenly’s Face this weekend and spectators are welcome. The goal is to lap the Gunbarrel run 25 times or more and it’s not for the faint of heart. The run descends 1,600 vertical feet of moguls. Many of the participants are dedicated “Face Rats,” a local term to describe the aficionados of Heavenly’s most visible run. The race runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 25. Registration is full, but guests are invited to come and celebrate at the California Base Area with live music and a free pasta dinner from 4-5 p.m. in the Cal Lodge Cafeteria.
Heavenly’s Pond Skim event is scheduled for April 16. Skiers and boarders try their luck descending the mountain and then skimming across a pond. There is always a crowd to cheer them on. Registration is the morning of the event starting at 8:30 a.m. in the Cal Lodge. The pond skim is 1 – 3 p.m. with live music from 3 – 5 p.m. at Cal Lodge.
While all the moisture is easing California’s drought situation it will bring a full lake this summer and plenty of recreation for white water rafters.
