Lake Tahoe residents know that August is far from the “dog days of summer.” Usually, we look forward to summer temps and beautiful days through the start of October. Here are some ideas for wringing all the fun out of Tahoe’s summer to fall transition.
Hike a new trail
We can get stuck in a rut with the plethora of options here in the Lake Tahoe Basin, but as summer crowds ease now is the time to strike out and explore. Parking at trailheads after Labor Day improves making it easier to go on some of the most popular tourist routes like Eagle Falls above Emerald Bay, the Rubicon Trail, or Mount Tallac. Or maybe you are ready to really get away from it all, consider backpacking in and camping overnight in Desolation Wilderness at one of the many alpine lakes. Come prepared to pack it in and out, complete your backcountry permit at the trailhead, and be prepared for temperature swings. It gets quite cold at night, and thundershowers can come up quickly.
Sign up for a race
From paddle boarding to bike races, September brings events on the water and around it. Stand Up for Lake Tahoe, Sept. 16-18, is holding the 2022 Tahoe Cup – Lake Crossing. If you don’t want to go it alone this year, they have added a Team Relay category. The Crossing starts at Lakeview Commons Beach, South Tahoe, and finishes at Watermans Landing, in Carnelian Bay.
The Lake Tahoe Marathon returns Oct. 14-16 with everything from a 5K to ultramarathon categories. The 18th annual Tour De Tahoe bike race around Lake Tahoe’s 72-mile shoreline is set for Sept. 11.
Hit the South Lake Tahoe Beer Trail
Relax after your outdoor adventures with some local craft beer. Visit Lake Tahoe provides a handy map of the breweries. There are nine on the South Shore to choose from.
