Fitness, cooking, and outdoor adventures in South Lake Tahoe

Luckily, for residents, South Lake Tahoe is home to Lake Tahoe Community College offering a myriad of continuing education opportunities. For those not seeking a degree, Lake Tahoe Community College’s CONNECT program offers a variety of courses including outdoor adventures, healthy cooking, fitness classes, and creative projects. It even has summer camps for kids.

Or spruce up your home cooking regimen with a class from the Community Kitchen. The college also offers a fitness center and passes can be purchased through the CONNECT program.

In addition to the college’s offerings, the city of South Lake Tahoe has an NHL-sized ice rink which is open for public skates, figure skating, lessons, ice hockey programs, and party rentals. The South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena is home to the Lake Tahoe Lakers, a junior hockey team competing in the U.S. Premier Hockey League and the Tahoe Hockey Academy. The arena offers adult and youth ice hockey programs and leagues year round.

The South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission recently approved a plan for a new and improved South Lake Tahoe Recreation & Aquatics Center. The new recreation center will feature a lap pool, a recreation pool, a second floor, an indoor track, a state-of-the-art kitchen for senior meal preparation, and much more.

For hikers and mountain bikers active organizations like the Tahoe Fund and TAMBA (Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association) are growing the Basin’s trail systems every year with routes like the Lily Lake Trail. The 2.1 mile route connects the trail system from Angora Ridge to Lily Lake and has helped to reduce traffic on narrow roads. It offers a car-free trail for hikers, experienced mountain bikers, and equestrians to access Fallen Leaf Lake, Glen Alpine Springs and Desolation Wilderness.
